Galatians 1:1-5 Sermon Discussion Questions

  • The Gospel in Galatians
    • The gospel is the announcement that Jesus has sufficiently fulfilled all God’s demands through His perfect life and sacrificial death enduring God’s just wrath for our sin so that through faith in Him we might be united to Him by His Spirit, declared righteous, freed from condemnation, and accepted by His Father to inherit the promise of His eternal life in his kingdom.
  • SUMMARY : The good news is Jesus has done everything so that by faith in Him alone we might be accepted by God to inherit His eternal kingdom
  • JI PACKER:  The gospel is the announcement that God has saved sinners through the substitutionary death and victorious resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Martin Luther: “The gospel is the summary of all comforting promises, the announcement that God, through his Son Jesus Christ, has forgiven our sins out of pure grace.”
  • D.A. Carson  “The gospel is the announcement of what God has done in Christ to reconcile people to Himself, culminating in the cross and resurrection.”
  • Michael Horton: “The gospel is not good advice about what we must do for God; it is good news about what God has done for us.”
  • General Study Questions: Briefly discuss these questions to set the context for your discussion.

    • How would you summarize the gospel?
  • Application Questions:
  • What initial conviction, encouragement, or general observations do you have from the passage after the sermon?
  • What is the difference between viewing the gospel as good advice or an authoritative announcement? How do you tend to make this gospel just more good advice? How can you make the prominent message you intake each day?
  • Where are the places you look for grace apart from the gospel? How are you trying to achieve peace apart from the gospel?
  • What specific way will you encourage someone with the grace and peace of the cross? Be specific (ex. send a struggling friend a handwritten note reminding them of the gospel; text specific Scripture to someone you know who needs peace)
  • What ways do you steal God’s glory through pride or pity? How might you make much of Jesus by minimizing your glory and boasting in your weakness?
